If you feel creative, home-made invitations could be a fun introduction with this type of party. Using card stock for invitations from your local craft store, you can also different colored, shaped, and sized card stocks to cut out hats of all different shapes and sizes. Some stores will also carry a "Cat in the Hat" stamp that you can use to decorate your invitation appropriately. Some creative verbage for inside the card includes:
"You could not, would not, want to miss a celebration such as this!!"
"Bring your hat, we have the cat, maybe a mat, but likely no rat - it’s a party!"
Purchase Cat in the Hat balloons, table decorations, plates, napkins, and serveware. Hang red, black, and white streamers along with red, white, and turquoise balloons. Buy cat dishes and toy mice to use at the table as decorations also. If you can find it, buy a HUGE quarter of Swiss cheese and use it as a centerpiece surrounded by grapes, apple slices, and crackers. (see food for more details)
Purchase funny shapes and sizes of hats, and have them all over the room. Make sure you have as many "Cat in the Hat" type hats as you can find. Also, look to find different types of funny ties to tie on your guests as they enter, and include cat whiskers if your kids will allow it. Have them pick out the hat they want to wear!
Prop up as many Dr. Seuss books featuring the Cat in the Hat as you can find around the room, in different spots, both high and low.
Craft Ideas2-6 Year Olds

Honor Dr. Seuss’s 100th Birthday by creating the largest birthday card and sending it to Dr. Seuss (see www.seussville.com for more details)
6-10 Year Olds
Fish bowl decorating! What can be more fun than to give each child their own fishbowl (complete with one fish!) to take home. Give them markers, paint, and other items to decorate their fish bowls so that they resemble the Cat in the Hat motif.
Honor Dr. Seuss’s 100th Birthday by creating the largest birthday card and sending it to Dr. Seuss (see www.seussville.com for more details)
Game Ideas2-6 Year Olds
Read 3 stories. Nothing captivates the hearts of children more than reading about the adventures of the Cat in the Hat.
Cat in the Hat Trivia - fun for kids of all ages! Have a list of questions (10-15) that are related to the stories you just read about the Cat in the Hat. Have the kids raise their hands for the answers!
6-10 Year Olds
Hat toss (from www.seussville.com). Using construction paper, paper bags, markers or crayons, and about 5-10 sheets of paper per person, you can create your own hat toss game! Open the paper bag, roll down the top to make a brim, and decorate with either the construction paper or the markers. Write your name on your new paper hat. Then, wad up the pieces of paper into little balls. Next, place your hat approximately 3 feet in front of you, and see how many wads of paper you can get into your hat. The person with the most in their hat at the end, wins.
Have the kids make up a Cat in the Hat rhyme. The funnier the rhyme, or the more like the Cat in the Hat - the more likely to win a prize!
Food Ideas
Kids love food! With too many activities and crafts, it may be difficult to incorporate too much food, but here are a few easy food ideas to match with the theme of the party:
Chex mix is a great party food, and resembles cat food. In a big cat dish in the center of the table, have a huge amount of chex mix for your guests! Don’t forget the bowl of milk - allow them to lick it like The CAT would!
Another food option is cheese, apples, grapes, and crackers. Using a large cheese wedge, surround it with apples, grapes, and crackers. Let the kids slice their own cheese (with supervision) and eat their cheese slices with the fruit and crackers. Healthy and fun at the same time! Make sure they have a bowl of milk to wash it down with!
Incorporating just a few of these fun ideas will ensure your little guests have a fun time with the Cat in the Hat!
Above all - have FUN and don't forget to take lots of photos.
