It is also a day to appreciate the wonder and beauty of our native wild birds.It is a sad fact that many thousands of beautiful exotic birds are unable to spread their wings and experience the gift of flight. Exotic birds, even though they may be breed in captivity should not be treated like domestic animals. This of course does happen and many are still sold by pet shops as domestic pets and confined to cages. National Bird Day is a time to remember birds, both exotic and native for the amazing creatures that they really are. If you are planning a party to celebrate National Bird Day, you could arrange a trip to your local wildlife and wildfowl center to view water birds in their natural habitat. It’s a great day out and your children will love to buy a bag of seeds at the gift shop to feed the birds. Another great way to spend the day is at an aviary, especially one that houses birds of prey or exotically plumed birds such as parrots. If you are thinking of holding your party at home, then why not have a themed party. You can decorate your garden or backyard with colorful cutouts of rare (and not so rare) birds and offer prizes for the first person to correctly identify all the species. You could also have a costume party where all the guests have to dress as different birds. A good activity for children would be to make birdfeeders, which they can then take home and put up in their own gardens.
