While our children are at home, we are able to watch what they eat and drink. We can also see that they brush and floss their teeth properly after meals. When they are at school, or the park however, they may not be aware of the damage those candy bars, cakes and canned fizzy drinks are causing. A positive attitude toward dental health is something that needs to be ingrained in childhood. If this does not happen a lifetime of bad habits can eventually lead to your children having false teeth by the age of thirty. Why not arrange your party as normal, but choose healthier options to normal party food. You can substitute sweet n low for sugar in cakes. You can buy low sugar or unsweetened drinks and snacks and prove to the children that there really is no difference in the taste. You also get to prove to the children that there are so many health benefits in choosing the alternative brands. You should explain to children the dangers of sugary snacks and their roles in creating cavities. Try to offer advice on how to brush and floss their teeth. Let your children know that these are the skills that will keep them from having the dreaded fillings. At the end of the party you could give out party bags that contain a new toothbrush, floss and a selection of sugar-free sweets. And don't forget dental chews for your cat or dog, after all, pets need dental care too.
