This special week is the ideal time to create awareness of the sacrifices that these brave men and women all too often have to make in the line of duty. During National Police Week, all flags around the country are flown at half mast and memorials are held, particularly at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial wall in Washington, D.C. The walls of here are inscribed with the names of approximately fifteen thousand law enforcement officers who have given their lives helping to keep the streets of America safe and free from crime. During National Police Week, it is common for precinct houses to throw open their doors and hold open house days in order to allow the public to meet and great the local law enforcement officers. This is the ideal time to show your local officers your appreciation for all they do for the community. It is also a great time to ask for advice on how best to protect yourself and your home against common threats such as burglary. Although many of the precincts arrange refreshments and activities for adults and children alike during National Police Week, it can also be a good idea to take something along to share. An even better idea would be to host your own block party or barbecue and invite your local station house as guests of honor. Whatever you decide to do it is important to remember that the safety of our streets rests with these people and they really should be honored for the work they do.
