A Thanksgiving Celebration

Traditionally, Thanksgiving, celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, is the time for friends and family to get together. During this get together they take stock of the year the year so far, and to remember all the reasons they have to be thankful.

In the United States, Thanksgiving tends to be almost a 'four day weekend', and is almost totally celebrated at home. It is a time for enjoying the company of close friends and family, rather than the more outdoor activity orientated holidays such as Christmas or the 4th of July which might include a trip to the concert, church, carolling or a picnic and firework display.

Traditionally the day of thanksgiving itself revolves around the preparation and slow consumption of a large dinner. Often this dinner will stand in place of brunch and supper and like Christmas, people will spend the majority of the day sitting around the table. There are normally many delectable dishes, and the time is spent catching up on family news and reminiscing over times past.

The centrepiece of the dinner itself is most commonly a large turkey. This dish is in fact so inherent to the celebration that many people actually refer to thanksgiving as 'Turkey Day".

Trimmings served alongside the turkey usually are stuffing, both roast and mashed potatoes, green beans, sweet potatoes, Waldorf salad, roast chestnuts, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cranberry sauce and gravy. Many vegetarian households prefer to serve tofurkey, which is a turkey flavoured dish made of tofu, which also works very well with all the traditional thanksgiving trimmings listed above.

Deserts served at thanksgiving traditionally involve some sort of pie. The most popular pies are pecan pie and pumpkin pie. Another thanksgiving favourite is apple pie, which is also a very popular choice among many households.
