Saint Patrick's Day, is held on March 17th every year. While this was traditionally a religious festival, it has now been transformed instead into a celebration of all things Irish. Contrary to popular belief however, the first St Patrick's day parade was not held in Ireland, but in Boston, Massachusetts in 1737. The day only became a public holiday in Ireland in 1903, and from that date until the 1970s all bars were obliged to close on Patrick's Day.

A St Patrick's Day Festival and parade has always been held in Dublin, but nowadays this Dublin festival lasts for five days and is the biggest Saint Patrick's Day celebration in the world, drawing crowds from all over the world.
In America, the New York parade is the second biggest Saint Patrick's Day festival in the world and it is common for even those who have no claim to Irish ancestry to declare themselves 'Irish for a day'.
Green is the prevalent color of the day, with many cities even repainting their traffic routes. Chicago routinely dyes major rivers green, while Savannah does the same with the city fountains.
Irish food is served in bars, restaurants and cafes and the beer, or lager is often tinted with green food dye, while patrons also dress in green.
If you are planning to throw a party at home for St Patrick's Day, try adding a drop of green food dye to your drinks and cake mix. You could also try serving some tasty Irish meals such as stew, colcannon, rashers, and pudding (bacon and both white and black blood pudding.) For an extra special treat, try Oysters Kilpatrick, a delicious dish of fresh oysters cooked with bacon and garlic. Of course the day won’t be complete without a touch of shamrock which is normally worn on St. Patrick’s Day.
