Perfect Sesame Street Party Ideas

Looking for Sesame Street party ideas? Look no further...we've got it all!

Big Bird, Ernie, Bert, Elmo, Snufalupagus, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, Kermit the Frog, Grover, The Count, and all the gang down at 201 Sesame Street will be opening their doors to welcome your guests to your Sesame Street Themed party!

Invitations:

For a fun, home-made invitation, use the "Sesame Street" sign, and insert the invited child’s name on the outside. On the inside, some ideas for wording include:

"Tell me how to get to (child’s name) birthday party!"

"Somebody come and play - party at my house with Elmo and Big Bird!!"

"Wheeee! Look at Elmo go to (child’s name) birthday party!"

Decoration Ideas

  • Cardboard cutouts of streetlights and a big sign that says "Sesame Street" are a great way to help kids feel like they’ve walked through the TV right onto Sesame Street. Create a "paved" road through the room as well.
  • Include the whole gang - from Snuffy to Elmo, with either posters or stuffed dolls resembling the Sesame Street characters scattered around the room. Include Sesame Street streamers and life-sized balloons or cutouts of Big Bird, Elmo, or Cookie Monster standing around.
  • Decorate your tables with Sesame Street plastic table cloths, along with plates, napkins, tableware, and other Sesame Street character cut-outs to put on the table. Find small, plastic trash cans (spray painted silver) to use for food or even for beverage holders! For extra fun, transform your dining area into a diner, complete with a soda fountain and stools (easily found at flea markets or antique stores). Make sure Grover and The Count are hanging out with you as you serve up some fun drinks for the kids!

Craft Ideas2-6 Year Olds

  • Have each child cut out their favorite Sesame Street character and paste it on to a blown up picture of the actual Sesame Street. This way, the kids can create their own Sesame Street.
  • Cut out several giant Big Birds, and paint them yellow. Have the kids glue feathers to Big Bird, and have them pay special attention to attaching his big, orange feet!

6-10 Year Olds

  • Sesame Street Scrapbook. Have small scrap books for the kids to create their own Sesame Street albums. Using Sesame Street stickers, scrapbook paper, and other stick-on words, phrases, letters, numbers, and icons, help the kids get started with child-safe scissors and double stick tape. With pictures from the party, they can fill their scrap books later with great memories from the fun they had with all their real and make-believe friends!
  • "Make your own puppet!" Buy some clean socks, and have the supplies on hand to enable the guests to make their favorite Sesame Street character out of a sock puppet! Be sure to include cloth paint, eyebrow material (for Oscar, Bert, and Ernie) eyeballs, big noses (Grover; Elmo), and fur or feathers for Snuffy and his best buddy, Big Bird.

Game Ideas2-6 Year Olds

  • "Feed Oscar". Using small bean bag balls, have each child stand 2-3 ft. from a large silver trash can much like the one in which Oscar lives. Give each child 3 bean bags to throw into the trash can. The child who gets all three in the can wins an Oscar doll!
  • Have a costume party. Ask each child to come dressed as their favorite Sesame Street character, and have prizes for "Most like the Character", "Best Elmo", etc. Make sure (budget willing!) you have enough categories that each child can win something.

6-10 Year Olds

  • Sesame Street Trivial Pursuit. Test the minds of your guests as to their knowledge of their friends at Sesame Street. Sample questions include: "Are Ernie and Bert brothers?"; "Which character is the oldest Sesame Street member?"; "Newest?"; "How many cookies can Cookie Monster fit in his mouth?", etc. The child who gets the most answers right, wins.
  • "This Game Brought to You by the Letter ... and the Number..." Using the first letter of the birthday child’s name, and the age of the child, along with a 60 second timer, have the kids write down all the items they can think of that start with the same letter as the child’s name. For example, if the child’s name is Matthew, all the words would start with the letter "M". If "Matthew" is turning 7, the second half of the game can be all the items the kids can think of that start with or have the number seven in them, for example, 7-11, 7 Wonders of the World, 7-Up., etc. This game should have two winners--one for the letter and one for the number!

Food Ideas

Kids love food! With too many activities and crafts, it may be difficult to incorporate too much food, but here is a fun, easy food idea to match with the theme of the party:

Make your own sundae! Create a sundae bar at your soda fountain area, and have all the kids take their previously scooped ice cream dishes and top with all the goodies: hot fudge, strawberry, caramel, nuts (check for allergies), whipped cream, cherries, and even bananas! Fun and yummy, this will be one of the highlights of the party!

Incorporating just a few of these fun ideas will ensure your little guests have a fun time with the whole Sesame Street gang!

Above all - have FUN and don't forget to take lots of photos.
